Its just a thought, why do you think the fan is failing?
there a simple component using permanent magnets and a simple diode 
switching circuit to change the polarity of the d c current to the 
coils. one small drop of 3in 1 oil will fix this problem applied with a 
match,   This is usually the problem  with these fans, apart from 
clogging with dust.
Do check in the service manual available from IBM before you spend the 
155 mentioned, as some thinkpads  can have the coolng fan just under the 
keyboard where  a 5 minuite job will fix it. Usually 2 or 3 screws and 
it lifts out.
Certainly dont send your thinkpad to Solectron at this time. Do read the 
desaster  stories at the thinkpads.com forum run by bill Morrow about 
this repair outfit.
