[Thinkpad] OK, not a Thinkpad issue, but bear with me... Any ideas?

I would go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer, then download
their drive fitness test which can be booted from a floppy or CD. Then run a
full test. You will know fairly quickly whether the hard drive has anything
to do with the problem.
Then I would go to one of the sites such as www.majorgeeks.com, and download
memtest86, and run a memory test for four hours, if it will boot to a
floppy...
That model has had problems with hard drives, video graphics, and memory,
primarily, with some cases of failed power supply. Your problem is not
typical of the power supply failure.
