[Thinkpad] Further Update on OK, not a Thinkpad issue, but bear with me... Any ideas?

Further frustrating results:

  - the Symantec Disk Doctor run fixed some indexes (indices?), but no
bad sectors, and no file errors.

  - the browser in Symantec Recovery Disk (from NIS 2006) shows what
appears to be all partitions and files intact and the right size

  - but the machine still won't boot, and I can't figure out how to
capture the error log that should be created at the forced shutdown.

Maddening.
