[Thinkpad] OK, not a Thinkpad issue, but bear with me... Any ideas?

Hello,

Could the system (or a particular component, such as the CPU or a video
card) be overheating? This could cause the behavior you noted in your
primary Compaq desktop computer.

If you open the computer's chassis, do all of the fans inside spin freely
and smoothly for a revolution or two when you gently tap them with a finger?
If not, they should be cleaned or replaced. Likewise, the chassis should be
cleaned of any dust or debris which may be fouling the air vents.

Replacing the chassis fans with higher airflow volume ones or adding
additional fans can often solve overheat conditions.

Regards,
