[Thinkpad] OK, not a Thinkpad issue, but bear with me... Any ideas?

I take your point, and guess it's one of those definitional issues....

True, I don't get a "missing NTLDR" sort of error, but I never get to 
the desktop, either.

I've got it shut down now, re-seated all the cables and memory, and 
letting it cool down to see if it is some sort of heat related issue.
