A drive that size and age could have failed at any time... and the failure
could easily be unrelated to anything else you did... a 2.1 GB, 17mm
"jobbie" could have easily been 10 years old, or more... and it was not a
reliable drive to begin with... The only fault is on the person who
expected it to last forever. Seriously, I doubt that the drive was killed
by disk housekeeping software. I died because it was time for that one to
go.
Saving the data is often possible by installing it on an adapter, then
inserting it as a slave in a decent desktop machine as a slave. 70 percent
of the time, you can get it spinning in a desktop long enough to drag and
drop all the data to the desktop hard drive.... or burn to a CD or a flash
drive.
The adapters are sold at www.geeks.com, www.compusa.com, www.outpost.com and
others for $2.95 to $7.95.
Do not waste a lot of time and boot efforts, as even getting it to spin as a
slave will be limited. Once installed, attempt to get all your data the
first time it powers up, because it won't work for long.
