Thanks for the pointers.
I've solved the problem now.

The problem was that after buying a T43
and installing a generic Windows XP which I purchased from my college,
when I tried to install DirectX I was told that the graphics adapter
did not support it.
When I looked at the Control Panel 
I was told the graphics adaptor was Unknown.
I solved all my problems by downloading the IBM Software Installer,
and installing all the software it suggested.

My problem now is that I cannot get hold of the machine
as my grand-daughter is playing Sims-2 on it all the time ...
