The USB bus can deliver a certain amount of current, somewhere
around 500mA.  The sandisk drive probably wants a couple
hundred mA, which some USB hubs can't deliver.  I'll bet
that the thinkpad can feed it, but a technical book on the
tp will have to be consulted as to the exact amount it can
deliever.
