[Thinkpad] Processor Question

I just bought a new ThinkPad from Bruce Markowitz (thanks Bruce!) and
appreciated all the advice I got from you folks on what to get. I am now
contemplating replacing my desktop and have 2 quotes from local computer
stores. We are not gamers and use it for normal house use.

One estimate lists an Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz 4M cache processor on
an Intel DG33BUC (PCIx16, audio, video, GBE LAN) motherboard with 3 GB RAM
running Vista Home Premium with a 500 GB SATA II Western Digital 16 MB hard
drive and a 22" AOC 212VA-1 Wide Screen Flat Panel Monitor with built in
speakers. They list an Intel 3100 Media Accelerator as a video controller
an a video expansion slot.. It has a full 2 yrs parts and labor warranty
except for the monitor which is manufacturers warranty.

The second estimate shows an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 6000+ (3.0 GHz) AM2
socket L2=1 MB x 2 125 W Retail processor on an ASUS Motherboard M2A-VM AMD
socket AM2 AMD690G DDR2 800 4*SATA PCI-E GB LAN 10. It has Vista Home
Premium with 3 Nspire 1 GB DDR2-667 w/ heat spreader Retail RAM chips with a
Seagate 500 GB Int 3.5 in SATA 3 GB HDD 7200 RPM 16 MB 1-in height 5 yr
warranty. It also lists a Rosewill 52-1 Internal Card Reader USB 2.0
imbedded and a KDS LCD K-22MDWB Black 22 Widescreen 5 MS 700:1 DVI Speaker
HDCP Function Monitor. It shows an ATI x1250 Onboard video with dual
monitor support and a video expansion slot. Full 1 yr parts and labor
warranty.

Both are only dollars apart. I haven't any experience with AMD vs. Intel
nor Seagate vs. Western Digital and don't know how much I need a 52-1 card
reader. We use digital cameras and the kids download music and videos. I
aim to transfer VHS videos to the computer and perhaps burn some to DVD.
All these names and numbers befuddle me and I figure I need some educated
advice. Any thoughts?
