Hey, don't be too harsh on eMachines. My first Windows computer was one of
those. Got it, a monitor, Lexmark inkjet printer and a 1-year subscription
to MSN (for my 1st access to the InterNet) for around $350 from BestBuy.
Though Windows Me was a PITA, I loaded the UNIX Utilities on it and it was
OK. When my MSN subscription was about up I joined Juno and NetZero and
maintained free dial-up to the InterNet. As you can tell by my address I'm
still using NetZero. My "real" email address is bob at trebor.iglou.com on my
SCO OpenServer 6 system, but I tried subscribing to this mailing list two
times with my "real" email address and failed (though it works for the
ThinkPad Forum), so I used this one on NetZero.
In August of 2006 I replaced the eMachine with an IBM refurbished NetVista
and Windows XP Pro (which was just up to SP1) and Good Will got a box and
printer (I got an HP 1610) that was usable.
