I think the thread Rob pointed me to was the one I remembered, and
autopatcher did the trick.  It was a very simple process:: (1) install
the old W2K from the recovery disks; (2) Windows update to SP4; (3) run
autopatcher, and walk away.  One reboot later, an updated system.

The Heise scripts look much more complicated, with repeated reboots.
