If you decide to buy new, check the university - most institutions have
cut deals with one or more manufacturers for special education prices
for the students and faculty.  (For example, my school has deals with
IBM and Dell.)  There might be information on this off the university's
main web page (look for an IT tab or something similar), or from their
bookstore.  If you buy used, buy a Thinkpad; but if you buy new, it is
worth considering whatever the standard is at that university, since
then she will have access to easier tech information and support.
