There are pointing sticks and Trackpoints(r).   IBM has some patented
technology in their Trackpoints that most other vendors who offer
pointing sticks don't license.  The general consensus is that those
patented technologies are what makes the IBM/Lenovo Trackpoints work so
well and other vendors' products not work so well.
