[Thinkpad] T41p LCD failed, how to access external monitor?

With my T43p, if I have it in a dock and an external LCD display
plugged into the DVI port on the dock, the T43p automatically
displays on the DVI port connected external LCD display.  That
doesn't seem to be true of the VGA port on either the dock or
the machine itself.
