[Thinkpad] Thinkpad T40 Power Off problem

I have a Thinkpad T40-2373-19U that upon power up with promptly shut off with out warning.
 
When plugged into the AC Adapter the notebook will shut off within seconds of powering the unit on. When only powered by the battery, the notebook will run for approximately 2 minutes before it shuts down.
 
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
