[Thinkpad] Portable HD

I am looking at alternative backup methods, mainly at use of DVD's or an
external drive.
One question comes to mind that perhaps someone can answer?
How reliable over time are remote drives that have been in storage?
I ask because I stored a Thinkpad drive in a safe place once upon a time
only to find that it had failed when I tried to use it.
Thanks.

As well as a power source . There's no handy 5V DC that can run a 2.5" HD on
a CAT5 cable.
