[Thinkpad] Unable to set external resolution on X20

You need to get a display driver that is capable of the not-so-standard
1280x800 resolution. Though there are a lot of new LCDs out lately that
use these previously unused widescreen resolutions, there aren't a lot
of display drivers for older chipsets that support the resolution. You
said you already updated your driver, but was that to an IBM-supplied
version or from the video chipset manufacturer? I would suggest finding
the chipset manufacturer for your X20's video (Nvidia, ATI, etc.) and
get the latest display driver for your hardware. If that doesn't work,
then you might try going to the LCD manufacturer to see if there is a
monitor profile that helps. I doubt whether that will help, but who knows?
Frankly, I would suggest returning the widescreen LCD and getting a
1280x1024 or (better yet) a 1600x1200 model. Far more usable
real-estate with these and better compatibility.
