[Thinkpad] Unable to set external resolution on X20

Greetings,

Long time lurker and occasional poster hoping someone can shed some 
light on what must be a simple blunder on my part:

I just bought a 15.4 inch widescreen LCD to use as the display for my 
Thinkpad x20 which serves as a server at home (since the internal 
display is hosed).  I am unable to set the resolution for the external 
monitor to 1280 x 800 (which is it's native resolution).  At first, I 
couldn't set it to anything other than 1024 x 768, then after updating 
the display driver I can set it to 1280 x 1024 but it just scrolls the 
desktop, and I still don't see 1280 x 800 as an option.  What am I doing 
wrong?
