I've been very happy with Sharp Zaurus devices. What I'm using now
is the SL-C3000, which is now two years old: clamshell design,
640x480 color screen, ARM-architecture Debian OS, QWERTY keyboard,
external CF/Microdrive and SD slots, internal 4-GB Microdrive (which
I've replaced with an 8-GB CompactFlash card), mini-USB connector.
Setting it up to run e.g. Debian PocketWorkstation in chroot mode or
even for dual-booting full-blown Debian is also possible. No
built-in wireless, but I've had no trouble using a Planex GW-CF11X
Wifi adapter in the CF slot (I've used it in Japan, continental Asia,
Europe, North America, and on a bunch of Pacific islands). About the
only thing I would wish for is a transflective screen.
Very sweet.
