Hello,
As has been suggested, try booting from the Windows 2000 installation disk,
selecting the Recovery Console and issuing a "CHKDSK C: /P /R" command to
check the disk volume for errors and attempt to recover them. Or, if you
can mount the hard disk drive as a second hard disk drive in another computer,
use "CHKDSK C: /F /R" instead.

You might also want to create a floppy with the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test
software and run that across the hard disk drive and see if it reports any
problems:
