Most home networking hub/routers are set up so that devices on the 
inside of your network have a local (non-routable) IP address, usually 
beginning with 192.*.*.*.  Devices on the outside (Internet side) can't 
typically direct traffic to your internal devices because of the IPs. 
This feature does a decent job keeping your home network safe from 
external access.  Not perfect, but good.  I still recommend having a 
firewall tool on each computer like BlackICE that will further protect 
from unwanted access.
