Most of my Thinkpads spend their lives precisely that way, in a docking station
connected to an external monitor and keyboard and with the display closed and
therefore off.

What does the friend think can happen? Just curious. No Thinkpad that I'm aware
of that has a cooling fan has the fan discharge in the top of the keyboard, all
vent to the side or rear.

I'm not sure that you'll find anything on the IBM website specifically speaking
to this. The ability to dock a laptop and close the display, which automatically
turns the dsiplay off, has been a feature for so long that it's probably taken
as a "given" by now.
