AS = Arnold Shepperson
AS: Is this coincidence or what? I have just recently undertaken a close reading
of volumes III and IV of the CP precisely on account of Peirce's promise to
"treat formal logic by the aid of mathematics"; it's something to do with
the kinds of abstraction we can perform in 'Ethnology of Social Developments'
as suggested in a few of Peirce's classifications of the sciences ...
Arnold, Peirce List,
Coincidence? I don't think so ...
It's more like a hybrid of a synchronicity with an infernal recurrence,
all down-givvied up in that synchronoplastic infundibulum we call life.
I don't know what it is --- but there it goes again ...
It seems that the undercurrents of recent events, both on and off the Peirce List,
are dragging me back to geists from the zeits of my first round of Peirce studies,
1967-1980, when I invested most heavily --- $30 for 2-volumes-in-1 really did seem
like a lot back then! --- in CP 3 and CP 4, and spent two years before the master,
reeling through the microfilmed manuscrypts in search of whatever sooth I could
muster up to some "Complications of the Simplest Mathematics", as my so-called
"senior thesis" (Michigan State 1976) came to be called. Which is one of the
reasons that my so-called "senior year" came to be four years long.
Well, back to the grinstone --- I'm hoping my gnosis is sharper now.
