What good is our ideal if it cannot tell us how to tell
what we're for from what we're not, when it's before us?

All of which raises the antecedent question:
Whence the shadow of doubt, indetermination,
uncertainty, vacility, vagary, vaguity, ...
that seems to be inherent in a likely story,
likelihood, probability, icon, or even idol?
