Jim,
A combo reply to your last two ...
JW: You say:
JA: In these contexts, the syncategorematic treatment of logical operators
is one of the ways of denying the irreducibly 3-adic character of most
of them, and also one way of denying the deep formal analogy between
logical operators and so-called "extra-logical" predicates. All of
these denials spring from familiar catch-basins of nominal thinking.
JW: Hmmm, very interesting. I will have to think about this. I am not clear
about any uniformity of "syncategorematic treatment". Yet I can see that
"extra-logical" predicates might be a function of any attempt at special
treatment of the logical operators. I may be guilty of destroying the
deep formal analogy, though I cannot quite see what those "catch-basins"
might be (formal/natural?). I also wonder whether any attempt to swim
through a sea of structure doesn't commit one to making at least
"working", instrumental distinctions.
JW: The "extra-logical" predicates remind me of Quine. He giveth and taketh away.
He giveth regimentation of form and (appears) to take it back with holism with
respect to logical truth. But did you ever hear the story of "tonk". S/he was
a runaway inference ticket who arrived at her destination only to be questioned
by inspectors wearing axiom badges. She claimed to have been around since Chaos
and Chronos ruled. How could they accuse her of being extra logical? Inspector
Quine betrayed his holism and arrested her on the spot (or is that tail).
Yes, that is one of the right ballparks.
There is a kind of a dialogue between P's and Q's, Peircean ideas and Quinean ideas --
memory image of an old TV commercial with tokens of tiny A's and B's percolating in
a cartoon stomach to determine which of their types can get to the headache faster --
that's been running through my mind for a long time now. I discussed some of this
here a few years back, and I think I'm about ready to reprise it again under some
head like "Logic Of Indication" (LOI).
Stay tuned ...
