JR: What's the relevance of the bit about the "symbolist" movement in mathematics.
Peircean, non-Peircean, anti-Peircean, or merely a digression to an interest
of yours of no relevance here?

Joe,

Peirce's thought took place within a context, not merely of his own ideas,
but a historical context of comparable and contrasting developments along
the entire wavefront of intellectual activity in his times, many of which
ripples derived a fair share of their prime motivations from him, but the
greater fraction of which he was one of the most articulate reflectors on.
Accordingly, we find that many of the themes in his work are allusions to,
echoes of, or reflections on the motive themes of his age, indeed, Peirce
is often found putting new twists on the very same phrases that appear in
the works of his precursors and contemporaries. The symbolist sea change,
by conventional reckoning sighted by Peacock and charted by Boole, is one
of these areas of interaction between Peirce and his intellectual context.
