KM: You took up "OS-planar or SI-planar" and "SI-ism and OS-ism".
You never mention ground. Why is that?
Kirsti,
I concocted those terms as a sign relational way
of approximating objectivism versus coherentism,
and several other related dualisms. The notion
of a ground is one of the most protean concepts
in the entire Peircean corpus, figuring heavily
in his earliest approaches to sign relations but
fading almost wholly into the background of his
last, best definitions of sign relations. Some
of its synonyms on various occasions of use are
form (or pure form), idea, prescindible, quality,
reason, respect, and virtue, all of which terms
require explicit definition in their own rights.
In some sense the most general concept of ground
is always implicit in every consideration of not
just sign relations, but relations in general.
But at its most general the ground is simply
identical with the constraint on conjoined
domains that defines the relation itself.
In other words, the ground of a relation
is nothing other than the relation taken
in intension, and thus it can be of any
adicity or any category. At any rate,
that's how I understand it in general.
