GR: Again, this is why I am troubled by that view of philosophy which has it
forever going over and over quite old terrain. Not that there isn't an
important place for the "perennial problems" to be taken up again and
again. This has never ceased since the ancients, and will never cease,
and should never cease as each age must look at these matters from its
own standpoint. But there surely is, in the economy of research, a waste
of valuable time and energy in reinventing the wheel, etc.

Well, there is of course a kind of advantage that can be gained
from re-inventing the wheel, even a wheel that runs in the very
same conceptual treads, so long as the patent office is ignorant
enough of pre-existing practices that one can trick out a patent
on what's already patent. But this all goes back to the relation
between nominalism and mercantilism that I have adverted to before.
