Gary,

Of course, some things can't be helped.  It would test the limits
of any person's resolving power to transmit a complex theory of a
complex world through the ismatic prisms of a simplist world-view.
One cannot emphasize the virtues of red without being viewed as a
redist, and by insinuation negating the reality of orange, yellow,
blue, green, indigo, violet, just to mention the visible minority.
So a person, like Peirce, who pointed to the effective aspects of
conceivable effects in a context where so many others were fixing
on the purely conceptual aspects, gets charged with inconsistency
when he later reinforces the counter-balancing beam in situations
where the opposite stresses have gotten overwhelmingly emphasized.

So let's not bury him for that ...
