Arisbe List, Inquiry List,
The following is a list of the lists that I participated
in to any significant extent at various intervals during
the past five years, with indicators of the manager type,
as generally recognized by the group itself, though most
of these designations would as a rule be interchangeable.
01. ARIA = Arisbe List Administrator
02. COMM = Complexity List Manager
03. CYBO = Cybernetics List Owner
04. GLOM = Global Brain List Moderator
05. NKSM = New Kind Of Science Forum Moderator
06. OCAM = Organization Complexity Autonomy List Manager
07. PLOM = Peirce List/Forum Owner/Manager
08. PRIM = Principia Cybernetica List Moderator
09. SCOP = Sémiotique et Communication Propriétaire
10. SUOC = Standard Upper Ontology Working Group Chairperson
I'm giving this data for the use of any future researchers
who wish to evaluate my observations and speculations, but
the following points need to be recognized throughout this
informal review. Although it's an objective of this study
to achieve greater measures of objectivity as time goes on,
there is no pretense of an objective point of view in this.
These are one person's reports of his experiences in quite
a number of diverse groups, and it would be something of a
shock if there were too much agreement in what is observed
and what is reported from the perspectives of very diverse
participants.
The purpose of this study is to identify and to understand
general patterns and persistent phenomena, as they come to
be impacted by the architextures of the technology that is
used to support one form of human social activity. Though
real-life concreteness demands the citation and comparison
of a wealth of peculiar details, it's never ultimately the
peculiarities that can be of general use, but the patterns.
In this anecdotal phase of spinning and sifting hypotheses,
I do not plan to give much more than aggregate impressions,
and will cite instances that occurred on a particular list
only by the corresponding acronym. As these were all open
groups, in the sense that their archives are available for
public inspection, there will be nothing confidential here.
