Arisbe List, Inquiry List,

Let me now give a narrative description of the incidental observations
that I've made over the course of the last five years as a participant
in various and sundry online discussion fora, groups, or lists, all of
which embodied, to some degree, a "network of interaction" (NOI) whose
underlying "topology of interaction" (TOI) exemplified the category of
graphs that I previously characterized as a "planted claw" or a "plac",
as will go without saying in this frame, augmented by a complete graph
of "hidden edges" or "weak links", in the present setting constituting
the lines of communication for "off-scene messages", or what I'll call
"off-line arcs" (OLA's), for short. The OLA graph is a complete graph,
or complete digraph if you want to take the direction of communication
into account, on the subcollection of peripheral, or non-central nodes.

` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` o | o ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` `
` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` | ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` `

` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` `

A few other bits of graph-theoretical terminology will be useful.
The abstract graph called a "claw" is a complete bipartite graph,
or a complete bigraph, notated K_1,k, meaning that its nodes can
be parted into two sets, one of order 1 and one of order k, such
that there is a line between each node of the first set and each
node of the second set. The claw drawn above has the parameters
of a K_1,8. The adjective "planted" means "rooted at the end of
a terminal line", a rooting which is marked by the root node "O".
This root, owner, or umpire node is also called a "control node".

My narrative will be a mixed bag of statements, half-self-consciously
streaming through anecdotal observations and theoretical speculations,
and part of the task before us -- if you choose to accept the mission --
will be sort out which is which, to recognize the logical gaps, links,
and cross-fires between them, and hopefully to extract the lessons of
the experience, toward the end of forming a better society of inquiry.
