GR: Sop to Cerberus or no, it seems certain that the intelligence of the universe
    far transcends a mere human intelligence, or why human intelligence at all?
    This is an old religious argument (an evolutionary one as well, btw, from
    the Peircean perspective), which we can take metaphysically & existentially
    even deeper, as Kant (and others) did, asking:  "Why anything [lawful &
    structured] at all?" 

GR: Answer:  because the universe is intelligent (the truly
    religious, like Peirce, add, and  benign & creative).  

GR: So, is there in fact a creative semiosis beyond the human,
    indeed a "natural"  intelligence prerequisite to the human?
    Well, one could imagine that Peirce might say, "Look around you!"
    (and this attitude seems to me to be at the heart of coenoscopic):
    muse on It, on it All, on the infinitely complex structural content
    and purpose of the cosmos -- how nature evolves into reflective nature:
    for prime example, human nature.

GR: So, finally, I think that both Jon and Joe have important points
    to make (and Ben, Kirsti, Bill, Jim and others as well).  Jon even
    delineates a trichomony of perspectives.  But after the analysis,
    then what?

Sounds like you had a transcen-dally splendid holiday,
away from the nitty gritty grind of counting flowers
on the wall and pebbles on the beach.  News of the
day here is that we're back to all the old saws
of Archimedes' chilia-gon-carni-vale-of-tiers,
that Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, Peirce, ...,
all took their turns at spinning the wheel
of chance, love, logic, ..., disporting
the diversitudes of their sundry spins
on the alphabetic distinction between
concept and image.
