LOG. Note 3
o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o~~~~~~~~~o
| Logic Chapter 1 (cont.)
|
| The method which ought to be adopted is one which derives the categories
| from the functions of judgment but which has its starting-point in pure
| being. The first step of such a process may be described beforehand.
| Sensation presents a manifold and this manifold must be conjoined
| under the unity of consistency.
|
| Now to combine the manifold of the immediately present, in general,
| requires the introduction of a conception not given, precisely as
| the manifold of optical phenomena can only be reduced to harmony
| by the foreign conception of a luminiferous ether. But perhaps
| this introduced conception in order to be combined with the
| immediately present requires the introduction of another
| conception. And so on, until the conception of being,
| which 'is' the unity of consistency, can be directly
| applied.
|
| If, therefore, we begin with the conception of being
| and ask what it is that it conjoins to that which is
| present, we shall have the first conception under it.
| Then if we ask what 'this' conception conjoins to that
| which is present we shall have the second conception.
| And we can proceed in this way until we finally arrive
| at the conception which directly combines together the
| immediately present, in general. This proceedure seems
| to be absolutely determinative and to give no room for
| anything arbitrary. Now let us put it in practice.
