SOTU. Note 1

Two people get married in a given State of the Union
and take off on an extended honeymoon trip across the
United States. Strange to say, they discover that the
state of their union varies from one State of the Union
to the next, from legally married to not legally married
depending on the State of the Union in which they happen
to be sojourning from day to day. We can express this by
saying that the state of their union is not prescindible
from the State of the Union in which they happen to be.
Now, we may unthinkingly think of marriage as a 2-adic
relation, but in all times and all places it's really
a transaction involving two people and a communally
recognized authority of a civil and/or divine type.
Typically though, the state of two people's union
will remain constant with respect to variations
in the duly appointed authority, at least, as
it ranges through the sorts of lists that we
usually have in mind. In these settings we
would say that the state of two people's
union is prescindible from the locus of
authority, legitimation, or sanctity,
in our case, the State of the Union.
