Further thoughts on middle terms as "conceptual glue".
I think I used to call this "hypostatic electricity".
Consider a classical figure,
where Y is the middle term:

If middle terms were all that bound facts,
then their bindings would decompose into
composites of 2-adic implications.
So there must be a higher valence bond.
