Let's look at how this "relativistic turn" turns up in something
as innocent-looking as the transition from Aristotle's syllogisms
to Euler's circles to Venn's diagrams.  One gradually passes from
thinking of subjects and predicates as essentially different kinds
of entities, as one does, among other things, when subjects convey
an existential import that predicates do not, to thinking of terms
that are categorized at the same level of syntax, participating in
the propositional expression that indicates the objective situation
that the information conveyed by the signifying expression constrains
the extensional denotations to obey.  It all sounds so unremarkable now
that it may be hard for many to recall just how rough the road really was.
