Reification of Categories, or Nodification of Modes (cont.)
I first became wary of this problem in my grade school science courses,
where the fallacy of "reifying grammar" or "reifying syntax", as we do
when we "project" grammatical categories like nouns and verbs onto the
world, was especially singled out for unrelenting critical examination.
I think that the beginnings of my semiotic consciousness, perhaps even
my semiotic self-consciousness, hark back to this very early education.
This lesson was reinforced all the more when I was a college freshperson,
vacillating between physics, mathematics, chemistry, and maybe even that
shiny new field of computer science, all of which transient embroilments
and recurrent immersions had the effect of lifting, if only a little bit,
the thin laminations of signs whereby our customary connotations between
our costumary denotations half conceal, half disclose this world of ours.
Intermittently speaking ...
